polytekton was hired to design the second edition of Diana Brantley’s book of poetry titled Phases, to be published in May 2022. We also designed the first edition, published originally in 2011 via Culicidae Press. Below are three different versions. The author already made her choice (final version above). Unlike the first edition, we simplified the cover and added some visual-sound images that represent a recording of polytekton saying the book’s title and the author’s name. The sound images are a play on the use of the word ‘phases’ to describe the way of sine waves that are either in phase or shifted out of phase. The images also add complexity to an otherwise fundamental astronomical phenomenon, i.e. that of the moon appearing to go through phases which, by extension, can refer to the way our lives consist of apparently distinct episodes.
