We just completed the design of Mira Engler’s latest book titled Landscape Design in Color: History, Theory, and Practice 1750 to Today for Routledge/London.

Above is the cover design (recto and verso), and below are some sample spreads of the book interior.

The design was quite complex, due to the author wanting the margins to have color strips, numerous images (384), and an upper page limit set by the publisher. This resulted in a narrow font choice (Perpetua for the body text and Helvetica Neue for the headings), tight layout, but also a good back-and-forth between designer, author, and Routledge editor.

The result is an appropriately complex book cover and interior that reflects the complexity of the author’s arguments, and the long time span (1750 to today) covered in the text. We’re looking forward to seeing the book in print in 2023.
