Here’s the new cover, updated from the previous version, for the new photography book by Michail Kouno├║pi, the Greek photographer and designer who now lives in the US.

This has been an interesting project, given the personal dimension of the photographs in the book. Using the German idea of History/Geschichte as a starting point (the title of the book is FamilienGeschichte = Family History) I extrapolated the word Schicht (layer) and used a photograph I took at the Joggins Cliff UNESCO site in Nova Scotia as an overlay on a grid of the family images from the book.

The cliff image obscures more than it reveals, but it also addresses the generational layers implied, though not made explicit from a linguistic perspective, between Geschichte and Schicht.
